Avoid drunk driving on Thanksgiving

Getting to and from Thanksgiving celebrations can be a hassle, especially if distances traveled are quite vast. However, it may be necessary for some to keep in mind the dangers on the road, especially the ones they may pose to other drivers. Drinking and driving is a dangerous and illegal activity, and there are options available that can help you avoid hitting the road during the holiday.

Auto club AAA noted it operates safe driving programs during Thanksgiving, which can be a great choice for some drivers. This is because it will allow some drivers to have a safe ride home and not have to worry about risking getting home otherwise.

Meanwhile, it also can be important to look at other options, like whether or not a safe driving program is available. The report noted that it is a good idea for individuals to consider things such as selecting a designated driver, taking a cab home or even staying with friends or family.

Dangers on the road are very real, whether there are drunk drivers in the area or not. In 2012, the total number of highway deaths rose to 33,561, according to a report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). This is 1,082 fatalities higher than in 2011.

"Highway deaths claim more than 30,000 lives each year and while we've made substantial progress over the past 50 years, it's clear that we have much more work to do," said Anthony Foxx, secretary of the Department of Transportation. "As we look to the future, we must focus our efforts to tackle persistent and emerging issues that threaten the safety of motorists, cyclists and pedestrians across the nation."

While taking safe driving practices into account is important, it also may be a good idea to look for a car insurance policy that can protect a vehicle in the event of an accident.
