You open the mailbox and there it is: another bill. With all of your cable, cell phone, utility, and credit card statements, it can feel like you’re swimming in a pile of fees and up-charges. While these bills might seem unalterable, they may not be as fixed as you think. Depending on your provider, you may be able to get a better deal with these negotiating tricks.

Play nice. Before you get frustrated with the customer service agent, remember that they’re a human being too.  Treat them the way you would want to be treated, with respect, and they’ll be more willing to go the extra mile for you.

Just ask. Asking is free, so don’t be afraid to ask for a discount or lower rate. You’d be surprised how often companies are willing to provide you with an incentive to stick with them. If you’re already taking advantage of a promotional rate and it’s nearing its end, ask the company to extend the rate. And, mention the promotions of their competitors and that you’re thinking of taking advantage of other offers.

You could say, “I notice that my promotional rate is about to expire and this is really as much as I’m willing to pay. Is there anything we can do to continue this rate?” If they aren’t budging, say, “Company X is offering X, and I think that could be a better fit for me,” which leads to the next trick.  

Do your research. Know what similar companies offer and what promotions they’re running. If it’s a better deal than what you’ve got, your provider may be willing to match the price or service of their competitor.

Remind them of your loyalty. If you’ve been a customer for a year or more, you’ve got some leverage. Even if you‘re relatively new, you’ve still got leverage if you’ve made your payments on time. The competition for your business is fierce; don’t be afraid to mention the company’s competitors and that you’re considering switching.

Call back or ask to speak to the supervisor. If you’re not getting anywhere with one agent, end the call and try again, or ask to speak with their supervisor.

Be ready to cancel. If you’ve done your research and are unhappy with your current provider, consider canceling that service and switching to a new provider. Shop around and have each provider try to beat the other providers’ best offer.

When negotiating your bills, keep these tricks in mind. You may be surprised at what deals you can get simply by asking.
